Why was The Witcher 3 so dark? 'It's dishonest to always show and paint the world in a positive light'

by Jody Macgregor

s part of The Witcher 3's 10th anniversary celebration, CD Projekt Red spoke to GamesRadar about the "secret sauce" that made its quests so special. Maturity was cited as the main ingredient by Paweł Sasko, a quest designer on The Witcher 3, because the majority of its developers were entering their 30s and 40s. Also, importantly, they were Polish... Read more.

The Witcher 3 once had a suicide mission ending 'inspired by Mass Effect 2,' a quest where Geralt joined the Wild Hunt, and a version of its vampire-focused Blood and Wine DLC without vampires

by Joshua Wolens

The Witcher 3 was, you may have heard, a large game. But it was once an even larger game. When it was still cooking over at CD Projekt Red, dev brains bubbled over with designs for questlines, cutscenes, and all sorts of other stuff that ended up on the cutting room floor before it released. Naturally, when I visited the studio for The Witcher 3's 10th anniversary, I asked for all the deets on the stuff we never got to see... Read more.

by Robin Valentine

Well, here's a good bit of timing. It’s All About You! — Priscilla’s Song Special: The Wolven Storm

by Vattier

Berries tart, lilac sweet... This May, we’re celebrating 10 years of killing monster in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. And what’s a celebration without some music? Sure, “Banana tiger” and “Le-le-le” have their charm. But if there’s one song that truly became the heart of the game (unless you’re a certain redheaded sorceress from Novigrad), it’s "Priscilla’s Song". Rend your heart open, then your love profess as we mark 10 years of the Wolven Storm in our newest It’s All About You episode! As the crowd at The Kingfisher Inn still dabs their eyes, we want to send a big, heartfelt thank you to all our Callonettas and Dandelions for a truly lovely performance. Extra love goes to The Fox + The Hound, who sang in English, and The String Theory for the instrumental piece.

UPDATE: Wahey, Cyberpunk 2077's sequel has entered pre-production, and is now being called Cyberpunk 2

by

UPDATE (29/05/25, 9:00 AM BST): In the investor call accompanying these results, CD Projekt co-CEO Michał Nowakowski responded to a question speculating that Cyberpunk 2 might release around late 2030 or early 2031-ish time by saying the following: "I can reiterate in a way what I said in one of the previous calls, which was basically that our journey from the pre-production to the final release takes four to five years on average, so a little bit less than I think what you said in the question. Having said that, keep in mind that each project is unique and there are many variables that influence the final outcomes. So, so I will not uh lead you into specific years, but yeah, I mean this is this is pretty much it looks like." Meanwhile, CDPR's senior PR manager Ola Sondej has told The Verge that Cyberpunk 2 isn't the game's official title, adding that it "just means it’s another game in the Cyberpunk universe". Original story follows: Read more

CDPR didn't put harsh themes in Cyberpunk 2077 or The Witcher 3 'for the sake of edginess', but because 'you're probably not making art' if the devs are never challenged

by Harvey Randall

It's not exactly news that Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3 both grapple with heavy-hitting themes—but there are a few stand-out moments that can really crawl under your skin. For me, just about all of ol' 2077 was a bit of an existential nightmare, though it was one I was thoroughly enthralled by... Read more.

CD Projekt Red reflects on its hubris following The Witcher 3's success, and how that led to Cyberpunk 2077's problems: 'I think that was the beginning of a bit of magical thinking for the company'

by Jody Macgregor

The Witcher games are one of the clearest examples of improvement over a series in videogame history. No backsliding here: The Witcher was a mess, The Witcher 2 was genuinely quite decent, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was a masterpiece. The Witcher 3's success put CD Projekt Red on Sony's speed-dial, but it had other consequences as well... Read more.

Celebrating 10 years of posting that one image of Geralt in a bathtub

by Phil Savage

It's 2017, and I'm in Warsaw, visiting CD Projekt Red to play its new game, a standalone, multiplayer version of Gwent. Before I'm allowed to do that, though, I'm asked a question by the studio's PR manager… one that's clearly been puzzling him for well over a year: "Why do you keep posting images of Geralt in the bath?".. CDPR boss says Witcher author Sapkowski's grumpiness is a 'persona,' he's actually lovely and the studio's 'updating everything' to make sure they respect his lore

by Joshua Wolens

There are two things I know about Andrzej Sapkowski: he wrote (and continues to write) the original Witcher novels, and he's a legendary grump. In fact, if I search our own website for the author's name, I find stories about him advising young writers to instead learn something "That makes money" like PC repair, saying he "never played" and does "not intend to play" The Witcher games, and other such things that seem like the hallmark of a—honestly, quite charming—grouchy author... A delayed review, a GOTY controversy, and a Big Geralt: Our strange 10-year relationship with The Witcher 3

by Tyler Wilde

I got my first look at The Witcher 3 at E3 2013 (say that three times fast), and dutifully explained to PC Gamer readers that although Geralt may be a pretty wild guy and also a kind of hunter, that's not what "The Wild Hunt" meant. Truth be told, the term was new to me, too... Read more.

The Witcher 3's development took CDPR from 'How do we escape annihilation?' to having Sony on speed-dial

by Joshua Wolens

10 years on from its release, The Witcher 3 is unequivocally a phenomenon—one of the bestselling games of all time that turned CDPR from a relatively small studio that makes niche RPGs to one that excites a level of interest comparable to, well, Bethesda... Read more.
